SCOTLAND’S BIGGEST WIND FARM OPENS

The official opening of the largest wind farm developed in Scotland to date took place in the summer. The wind farm, known as Windy Standard, comprises 36 600kW turbines and is sited near Carsphairn in Dumfries & Galloway.

This £17.5 million project has been developed by National Wind Power Ltd, who will also operate the wind farm on behalf of the owners National Power plc and Fred Olsen Ltd. It will produce an estimated 70-80 million kWh/year.

Windy Standard extends over two sites, Gallow Rig and Polwhat Rig, each of which was awarded a contract under the terms of the first Scottish Renewables Obligation Renewables Order (SRO-1). The electricity generated by the turbines is fed via underground cable to a substation located in a disused quarry in Carsphairn Forest. From there it is carried by 33kV line and fed into the local grid, at a price of around 4p/kWh - comparable to the cost of power produced by conventional power stations.
