Energy from Waste Association (EWA) |

EWA represents virtually all the key developers and operators of energy from waste (EfW) plants in the UK. Its mission is to build awareness of the environmental advantages of direct recovery of electric power and thermal energy from waste, and to facilitate the development, construction and safe operation of modern plants, with full community involvement. It was founded in 1992 as RWEG, the Recycling Waste to Energy Group, and in 1994 was relaunched as EWA. Early in 1995, EWA was joined by the Operators' Interest Group. This body had been created to embrace the shared interests of a number of local authorities and joint venture companies - many of whom had operated plants since the 1970s and, being committed to waste combustion, were now embarking on very major construction to bring their plants up to modern emission standards. Thus to the original six developers were added the experience of Coventry, Edmonton, Jersey, Nottingham and Sheffield, the latter two with significant waste-fired district heating schemes. Membership of EWA has grown rapidly over the past year and now totals 20 organisations, including local authorities, professional firms and equipment suppliers. SELCHP, Tyseley (Birmingham) and Cleveland, the first three new-generation EfW plants to be built in the UK, are all members of EWA. Chairman of EWA is Malcolm Chilton of AEP plc (not to be confused with the Association of Electricity Producers), and its director is Ray Palin. Activities include Government communications through frequent meetings with Ministers, backed by wide Parliamentary contact and close working relationships with officials. The Association has attracted cross-party support and has links with the three major parties. EWA arranges briefings and seminars for local authorities, produces publications and position papers, and works to develop positive public perceptions of the role of EfW. EWA aims to be a centre for information exchange on all aspects of EfW, and collaborates closely with related trade associations such as the Combined Heat and Power Association and the European Energy from Waste Coalition. It welcomes contact with any organisation interested in the development of EfW. For more information contact: Ray Palin, Director, Energy from Waste Association, 92 Horseferry Road, London SW1P 2EE; Tel: 020 7976 0036. We would like to thank the AEP, BWEA and EWA for providing contributions to this guide. |
