Vacancy Description
Background
MLSU sponsors 24 bodies including some of the world’s most prominent museums, galleries and libraries, such as the Tate, the British Museum, the Science Museum and the British Library. The Unit works closely with these institutions, ensuring they are in a position to meet the Government’s cultural policies. We are heavily involved in the implementation of reform programmes at a number of key institutions, and are responsible for the continued delivery of free access to the National Museums and Galleries and for ensuring the effective operation of our sponsored bodies through sound funding policies and the promotion of good governance.
Key Duties
This vacancy heads the team responsible for the Natural History Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the National Museum of Science & Industry (which includes the Science Museum, National Railway Museum and the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television) the Museum of Science & Industry in Manchester (including the Peoples’ History Museum), the National Coal Mining Museum, England, and the Design Museum.
The main areas of responsibility will include the following:
- As Project Manager for the PSA3 Museums Access Project, helping ensure that the museums sector is signed up to the delivery of the increase in visits by priority groups by 2008, and monitoring progress against the target.
- Acting as primary contact for the team's sponsored bodies on all other issues, building strong relationships with them, including seeing through the delivery of new funding agreements.
- Managing, maintaining and developing MLSU’s key databases on Performance Indicators and Visitors to the sponsored Museums and Galleries. This information is vital in tracking the impact of the highly successful free admission policy and in briefing Ministers, senior officials and Press Office.
- Parliamentary, Ministerial and Treat Official correspondence in relation to these bodies.
- Line management responsibility for one Grade C, and one Grade D.
- Work direct to A(U). A new Head of Unit will be arriving at the end of November, and may wish to review the above.

Project Working: Using strong project and business management techniques, you will work with colleagues to strengthen links with the museums sector (in England) as a whole.
