Vacancy Description
MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES
1. To provide specialist technical advice to users, industry and colleagues on the development, implementation and use of technological systems, eg via theoretical studies, technical assessments, cost benefit assessments, measurement programmes and investigations, carried out either in-house or via contracted resources:
- Interpret the customer requirement in technical terms
- Produce technical specifications
- Manage/carry out trials, studies or research and development work and evaluate the results
2. To plan, implement and manage complex radio engineering projects:
- Specify the engineering tasks required to achieve objectives, prepare procurement requisitions and generate formal work plans
- Technically evaluate tenders
- Manage external contractors and supervise progress of contracts to ensure quality deliverables are received on time and within budget
- Evaluate projects against objectives
3. To prepare and deliver high quality documentation, and professional presentations, eg technical reports and advice to users providing easily understood guidance on technical topics.
4. To liaise with emergency service users and industry suppliers to progress the delivery of departmental objectives.
5. To fulfil essential professional administrative responsibilities, including line management of any staff, progress reporting, sound financial management of any delegated budgets, attention to security issues and record keeping.
6. To fulfil the requirements of PITO equal opportunities policy and procedures and implement equality principles and practices within the context of the job.
7. To carry out any other duties that may be reasonably required commensurate with the level of the post.
PERSON SPECIFICATION Engineer – Equipment EMC
Qualifications
1. Hold degree level qualification in electrical, electronic or telecommunications engineering or have equivalent combination of formal qualification and experience.
2. Hold professional qualification as Chartered Engineer of a relevant Engineering Institution or have proven experience in carrying responsibility at an equivalent level.
Experience
3. Have a proven track record of applying engineering principles to deliver solutions in mobile radio, ideally in TETRA technology.
4. Have at least 5 years experience providing a full appreciation of industrial technical and commercial practices, project and contract management.
Aptitudes And Abilities
5. To apply specialist radio and electronic engineering knowledge accurately and appropriately (eg when managing technical projects, developing standards, resolving vehicle EMC problems, advising users, preparing and publishing papers and procuring technical goods and services).
6. Proficient in use of standard office IT packages.
7. To take a proactive approach to absorbing and comprehending new information and technological trends on a day-to-day basis through on-the-job learning and formal training events, seminars, conferences, colloquia and exhibitions to develop new knowledge and skills and to put these to practical use whilst working as an engineer.
Knowledge
8. Radio and electronic engineering theory and practice applied to mobile radio systems, equipment design and operation and digital communications.
9. A working knowledge of the communications requirements of the emergency services.
10. A good understanding of TETRA technology.
