Vacancy Description
Facilitating co-operation at both the national and international level, BNSC represents both academic and industrial interests. It is central to the fulfilment of the UK Space Strategy and is committed to:
- enhancing the UK’s standing in astronomy, planetary and the environmental sciences;
- stimulating commercial exploitation and wider economic benefits by promoting the use of space in government, science and commerce; and
- developing innovative space technologies and systems to deliver sustainable improvement in the quality of life.
Co-ordinating all the UK government’s interests in the civil use of Space and leading on the development and implementation of the UK Space Strategy, the Director General will promote UK involvement in space for research and exploitation and will work to ensure that the UK is better able to exploit the outcomes.
The preferred candidate will have excellent policy and analytical skills at the strategic level, an appreciation of the processes by which science policy is made, coupled with a broad understanding of science and technology and its potential for exploitation. He/she will be expected to assume a high public profile in the promotion of UK space activities and possess the influencing and political skills to be an effective negotiator in relevant for a nationally and internationally.
The Director General is accountable to the Minister for Science and Innovation and personal objectives are set by the UK Space Board.
The appointment will be for an initial period of 4 years, with the possibility of extension. A salary of up to £100,000 is available, more may be available for an exceptional candidate. A choice of excellent final salary and stakeholder pension schemes is offered.
