The establishment of a new Select Committee for Science and Technology by MPs was welcomed today by Lord Drayson, the Minister for Science and Innovation
26 June 2009
Lord Drayson, who also has responsibility for Defence R&D, the largest Government research budget outside the science and research ring-fence, had recently put the case for a separate select committee for the scrutiny of science across Government to the Leader of the House.
Following the vote in Parliament today, the Minister said:
"Science and technology have a vital role helping the country through the recession, and in achieving a stronger, sustainable economic future. They are also crucial to tackling the major challenges of our times, like climate change.
“Effective oversight of the use of science across government is important. I look forward to working with the Select Committee in supporting a dynamic science and research base.”
The new Select Committee becomes effective on 1 October 2009, which would allow the existing IUSS Committee to continue until it has completed their current business.
