The National Weights and Measures Laboratory (NWML) ensures UK measurement is accurate, fair and legal

It is responsible for policy on measuring instruments in use for trade and implementing European Directives on measuring instruments.

The science of measurement underpins the sale at both retail and wholesale level of food, petrol and many other goods. It is an essential for a sustainable trading economy.

The National Weights and Measures Laboratory (NWML) is an Executive Agency of the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills.

NWML, formerly the Standards Department of the Board of Trade, was established by the Weights and Measures Act of 1866.
