National Physical Laboratory

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) maintains, disseminates and researches measurement standards. It also represents the UK in the international measurement arena

NPL ensures that cutting edge measurement science and technology has a positive impact in the real world. Measurements help to save lives, protect the environment, enable citizens to feel safe and secure and support international trade.

NPL was established in 1900. The Royal Society appointed the first NPL Director, Richard Tetley Glazebrook FRS.
