Electric December annual online advent calendar calling for entries

Online 1st - 24th December Shoot, Share, Show

Deadline for entry: Monday 12 October 2009

Young People Across Europe

Get ready – Electric December, Watershed’s original end of year online showcase of creative talent, is back, led this year by an international team of young people from across Europe.

We’re calling for all filmmakers under 21 from Europe that have made a short film or are thinking about picking up a camera for the first time to join us, get involved, and help us create the content behind our webby windows to wonderland.

Your films will be in good hands: Watershed has electrified the world’s imagination for over a decade producing Electric December. Every year, electricdecember.org receives thousands of hits from over 90 countries worldwide. In 2008, thanks to the support of the European Commission, Electric December showcased shorts by young people from across Europe for the first time in its 10-year history as part of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue.

Work is already going on behind the scenes to make 2009 the best year ever, within the wider context of European Year of Creativity and Innovation. Young people from eShed.net, Bristol, UK and Skalvijos, Vilnius, Lithuania are working collaboratively to set the agenda for the project, thanks to the European Commission for their support through the Youth In Action programme.

The Bristol and Vilnius groups recently spent three days at Watershed working hard and playing hard producing trailers and posters for Electric December 2009 and soaking in the sights of the city. Later on this year this international steering group will regroup online to hand pick the 24 mini masterpieces that will be the content for this year’s calendar and to decide who the lucky winners are. They’re looking forward to receiving snappy shorts from other like-minded folk across the continent! Follow their diary online at: electricdecember.org/09/diary.

Adibah Iqbal, a member of eShed, said:

Working on electric December has been a wonderful experience, which has opened many doors for me. Having worked with young filmmakers from Lithuania, I have gained a very good friendship, and a deeper understanding of organising a film festival. Working with e shed was very fun and I hope to take part in other advents they will be holding in the future.

This is a unique opportunity for young people to get their work out there, viewed by their peers and some of the most influential people in filmmaking – not only online, but through the official Electric December DVD, the UK’s BBC Big Screens and at venues and festivals in the UK and beyond.

Last year’s winners received a travel bursary to attend BUFF Young People’s Film Festival in Malmo, Sweden and took part in workshops, met key people in the industry, screened their films in a cinema and generally had a fantastic film-filled weekend. We have similar treats in store for the eventual winners of Electric December 2009. For further information on how to submit film(s), log on to electricdecember.org.

Hurry, the deadline for entry is Monday 12 October 2009.

Developing Birmingham’s Digital District: What can we learn from the experiences of other European cities?

When?

9:15 – 13:00 on Wednesday 14 October

Where?

Fazeley Studios,
91 Fazeley Street,
Digbeth, Birmingham,
B5 5SE

What’s happening?

Announced in June this year, Birmingham’s Digital District will bring together the innovative, learning and creative sectors in the Eastside area of the city through the development of a next generation high-speed broadband infrastructure.

This seminar will provide an early opportunity for policy makers and stakeholders from Birmingham and the West Midlands to quiz other major European cities that are further along the journey in developing their own digital district. This dialogue will inform Birmingham’s policy thinking and ideas as the city embarks upon developing its own digital district.

Why attend?

The seminar will consider questions such as:

  • What are the critical success factors of a digital district?
  • What does a digital district look and feel like elsewhere?
  • How have digital districts been used to complement the success of established creative quarters?
  • What has been the experience of digital districts in the recession and what role do they play in boosting economic growth?
  • How have local authorities in Europe worked with stakeholders such as service providers, SMEs, universities and the local community?
  • How can Birmingham learn from, and use, the experiences of other European cities?

This is your opportunity to find out about digital districts elsewhere in Europe, to put your questions to our speakers and to contribute to the debate.

Who will be there?

There will be speakers from:

  • Berlin
  • Barcelona
  • Birmingham City Council
  • Digital Birmingham
  • Birmingham City University
  • University of Birmingham
  • Fazeley Studios

The principal audiences are digital and economic development policy makers from public authorities in Birmingham as well as the wider West Midlands region. Other stakeholders (from SMEs, universities, the local community etc) with an interest in the development of the Birmingham Digital District will also find this event particularly relevant.

The seminar is free to attend but places are limited and attendance is by advance online registration only. To register please visit:

Let us know how you perceive the role of creativity in education and you could win a trip to the European Union’s Creativity conference in Stockholm.

2009 is the European Year of Creativity and Innovation. A great number of activities have been taking place all year to discuss the role of creativity and innovation in the classroom and encourage teachers to explore new and different approaches to teaching and learning.

To better understand how teachers perceive creativity and innovation in their own teaching practice, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Education and Culture, in collaboration with the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) and European Schoolnet, has launched a new survey on teaching practices in Europe. We are interested in knowing your opinion and experience as a teacher.

Fill in the online questionnaire teaching practices and, if you so choose, include your name and email address to be included in a draw for 10 persons to attend the European Union’s closing conference for the European Year of Creativity and Innovation, hosted by the Swedish Presidency in Stockholm in December.

Who should fill in the questionnaire?

Teachers working in schools in any of the twenty-seven countries in the European Union, as well as Norway, Iceland, Turkey, Croatia and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
