The membership of professions needs to reflect the diversity of modern society and the customers that need to access their services.
It is in employers’ own best interests to recruit from as wide a range of applicants as possible. Those who discriminate, even unintentionally, risk losing the best person for the job.
Young people from less privileged backgrounds who have successfully completed their education and initial training , but who do not have family and friends in the professions to offer help and advice, may still find it difficult to secure a job opportunity within a chosen profession.
This may be because some employers in the professions have restricted views on what sort of person they think is suitable, or because their recruitment procedures, without meaning to, may create barriers.
You will find information in this section on how DIUS is working with key organisations to address barriers to access.
