The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) aims to promote and support scientific and engineering research
It is a non departmental public body, sponsored by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills. It was formed as a new Research Council on 1 April 2007 through a merger of the Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils and the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council and the transfer of responsibility for nuclear physics from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. It is established by Royal Charter.
Its chair is Professor Peter Warry and chief executive is Professor Keith Mason.
STFC’s mission is to promote and support:
- scientific and engineering research
- post-graduate training in astronomy, particle physics, space science and nuclear physics
- research in any other field which makes use of scientific facilities made available by the Council
- the advancement of knowledge and technology and to provide trained scientists and engineers
