The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) is the UK's main agency for funding and managing research, training and knowledge exchange in the environmental sciences

NERC is a non departmental public body, sponsored by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills and set up under the Science & Technology Act 1965 and by Royal Charter.
Its chair is Edmund Wallis and chief executive is Professor Alan Thorpe.

The work of NERC covers the full range of atmospheric, earth, biological, terrestrial and aquatic sciences, from the deep oceans to the upper atmosphere, and from the poles to the equator.
It delivers independent research, survey, training and knowledge transfer in the environmental sciences, to advance knowledge of planet Earth as a complex, interacting system.
