The NHS, with encouragement from DH, is implementing patient-level information and costing systems (PLICS). The implementation of PLICS is not mandatory but DH strongly supports the use of PLICS within the NHS.
Definition
Patient-level information and costing systems can be defined by the ability to measure the resources consumed by individual patients.
The clinical costing standards set out recommended best practice for the production of clinical costs and will support the production of patient level cost data. The standards aim to set a robust and consistent approach to costing across the NHS.
The results of the survey undertaken as part of the reference costs 2009-10 collection as to the use of PLICS within NHS organisations is summarised here.
The main remit of the group is to provide technical and practical advice on proposed changes and to support improvements to the annual reference costs collection guidance.
