National Mental Health Development Unit (NMHDU)

NMHDU

NMHDU consists of a small central team and a range of programmes funded by both the Department of Health and the NHS to provide national support for implementing mental health policy by advising on national and international best practice to improve mental health and mental health services. It does this by commissioning or providing:

  • specialist expertise in priority areas of policy and delivery
  • effective knowledge transfer on research, evidence and good practice
  • translation of national policies into practical deliverables that achieve outcomes
  • coordination of national activity to help regional and local implementation.

National Perinatal Mental Health

The remit of this report and related studies is to facilitate a better understanding of how and to what extent current and planned perinatal provision is capable of meeting the needs of BME women.

Mental health factfiles

NMHDU published 7 short documents in June 2010 outlining up to date, key facts and figures on mental health. The factfiles outline current evidence on the following subject areas:

  • Mental health and employment
  • Mental health and housing
  • The costs of mental ill health
  • Public mental health and well-being
  • Equalities in mental health
  • Stigma and discrimination in mental health
  • Ensuring greater access to talking therapies
