Hugh Griffiths is the acting National Director for Mental Health.
Prior to this appointment he was Louis Appleby’s deputy for six years. National clinical directors are sometimes referred to as Tsars. They are experts that oversee the implementation of a national service framework (NSF) or major clinical or service strategy. They act as advocates for the NSFs or strategy within the NHS and other services, and represent the NHS and other services in the Department of Health. National clinical directors also work with policy and delivery teams, clinical networks and the NHS management community to achieve joined up action.
Hugh's responsibilities cover wider mental health issues as an interim appointment to ensure that momentum is not lost in the implementation of a new mental health strategy, the long-term strategy to improve mental health services across the country which will succeed the previous NSF for mental health. When Hugh is in London he is based in the Mental Health and Disability Division in Wellington House. He has a small support team consisting of a Private Secretary and a Personal Assistant. He works 3.5 days a week for DH. He is also a consultant psychiatrist in the North-East of England and continues in part-time clinical practice.
