An extensive programme of work continues to support the NHS contribution to safeguarding children. This includes:
- website and discussion database to share best practice
- network for named safeguarding health professionals in mental health trusts
- funding Care Services Improvement Partnership (CSIP) to deliver a range of support for designated and named health professionals.
In February 2008 the Department of Health announced a three year funding committment of £10 million per annum to support health professionals in the new statutory child death review processes. Safeguarding children remains a significant focus and activities include:
- further development of the support provided to the NHS to deliver its safeguarding children responsibilities
- working with the DCSF and stakeholders to support the delivery of the Care Matters White Paper and the Staying Safe Action Plan.
Revised statutory guidance replaces the existing guidance, Promoting the Health of Looked After Children, which was published by the Department of Health in 2002. The revised guidance is statutory for primary care trusts, strategic health authorities and local authorities.
On 6 May 2009, the Government released its detailed response to Lord Laming's recommendations in The protection of children in England: A progress report. The response sets out the specific actions that the Government will take, in partnership with local agencies and key stakeholders, to address each of Lord Laming’s recommendations.
