DFID Conference - Eliminating World Poverty, Securing Our Common Future

Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Sir Bob Geldof, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Lord Nick Stern were among the leading figures from the international community who joined Douglas Alexander in his call to take urgent action to protect the world’s poorest from the downturn and the long term effects of climate change and global conflict.

In the run up to the London Summit, they came together for a two day high level event in London on Eliminating World Poverty, Securing Our Common Future which was attended by 350 high profile delegates comprising of leaders from civil society, the private sector and international development from more than 40 countries.

Photo: Geoff CrawfordThe conference was organised by International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander, who ahead of the London Summit, stressed that the economic downturn could devastate the developing world as 90 million more people are forced into poverty by the end of next year.

The event also focused on developing new strategies for development to minimise the impact of the economic downturn as well as long term impacts of climate change; conflict and food security on the world’s poorest nations. This will be fed into the new DFID White Paper on international development.
