New Minister at the Department for International Development

Chris Mullin, Member of Parliament for Sunderland South since 1987, was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State and deputy to Clare Short at DFID in 25 January 2001. He joined DFID from the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions, where he was Parliamentary Under Secretary of State from July 1999.

Mr Mullin was a member of the Home Affairs Select Committee from 1992 to 1999, and Chairman from 1997 to 1999; member of the Parliamentary Labour Party Committee from 1997 to 1999, and Vice Chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party from 1998 to 1999.

He was a journalist with the BBC World Service from 1974 to 1978, and from 1978 to 1984 with Tribune, which he edited from 1982 to 1984. As a journalist he travelled extensively in Asia. He is the author of Error of Judgment - the truth about the Birmingham Bombings (1986) and three novels.

Mr Mullin was educated at St Joseph's College Ipswich and the University of Hull. He is married with two daughters, and his interests include walking and gardening.
