Focus on education in Africa

Did you know that…
There
are nearly 40 million children out of school in Sub-Saharan Africa, more than
the entire population of Spain, and
UNESCO
estimates that Africa needs about 1.6 million more teachers to allow every child
to have quality primary education.
BUT, did you also know that…
In Kenya, over one million ‘out of school’ children enrolled in primary education after the government introduced free primary education. DFID supported this with a grant of £10 million in 2003. And in Ethiopia, the number of children enrolled in primary school increased by over fifty percent between 2001 and 2005. In part this was made possible by DFID Ethiopia's financial support. DFID also recently made a ten year commitment to provide £240 million to education in Ethiopia.
