UK supports vulnerable Georgians

Mike Foster at the European Commission and World Bank Georgia Donors’ ConferenceMike Foster, Minister for International Development, today committed a further £2 million to help the thousands of people displaced following the conflict in Georgia earlier this year. Speaking from Brussels where he is attending the European Commission and World Bank Georgia Donors’ Conference, Mike Foster said:

“Although the conflict in Georgia was short in duration, it has had a lasting impact. The thousands of people forced from their homes by the violence face a cold winter in temporary accommodation. Exposure to the harsh climate of a Georgian winter can kill the elderly and vulnerable.

“This is why the UK is committing a further £2 million to fund the work of the UN High Commission for Refugees, who are working to provide up to 48,000 refugees with shelter and access to basic provisions such as cooking sets.

“A well coordinated international response is vital to addressing Georgia’s post-conflict needs. We urge all of the multilateral institutions to work closely with each other and the government of Georgia to assure that post conflict assistance is delivered quickly and makes a real difference to the lives of the people of Georgia.”

The UK will continue to support Georgia’s development through our membership and financial contributions to the multilateral institutions such as the World Bank and United Nations.

Notes to editors

  1. In August 2008, the UK provided £2 million of humanitarian aid. This included: £1 million for the International Committee of the Red Cross; £550,000 to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees; £250,000 to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and £200,000 to the HALO Trust for mines risk education and de-mining.
  2. The UK has also contributed personnel and armoured vehicles for the EU Monitoring Mission and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe mission, bringing our total vehicles and equipment support to around £1 million.
