UK Delegation Press Release: Meeting on Burma, Washington DC
20th October 2007
Today the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for International Development
hosted a meeting on Burma in the margins of the
Annual Meetings
of the World Bank and IMF.
Douglas Alexander said: "The recent tragic events in Burma starkly remind us of the economic and political challenges faced by the Burmese people. The international community has expressed through the United Nations its deep concern, and all of us are working hard to maintain the pressure for dialogue and inclusive national reconciliation in the country.
"At this meeting we discussed the need for sufficient concrete and verifiable steps to be made along the path to reconciliation and reform in Burma. But we also had a preliminary discussion of how the international community would use aid, trade and debt relief to support economic reconstruction in Burma if these steps were taken."
