Speech
‘Growth at the heart of development’ - Douglas Alexander speaks on economic growth
31 March 2008

In a speech today at the Institute of Directors to an audience of business leaders, members of non-governmental organisations, developing country ambassadors and academics, Douglas Alexander set out his view of the importance of economic growth in tackling poverty.
He argued that economic freedoms should be given prominence alongside political and social freedoms, that the Department for International Development can help to create a positive global and local environment to stimulate growth, and that while economic growth should not be seen as an end in itself, it is a powerful ally in the fight to make poverty history.
The Secretary of State also announced that the Department for International Development is committing £37 million over three years to establish a new international growth centre. For more details see the press release.
