G8 - two years on
In
2005 the UK held the Presidency of the G8. In July 2005 the leaders of the G8
met at Gleneagles in Scotland. Few G8 summits have been the focus of such huge
public interest in a year in which millions worldwide campaigned to make
'poverty history'.
At the summit a wide range of commitments were made to tackle the problems faced by poor people and poor countries around the world.
Two years on much progress had been made in delivering the commitments made at Gleneagles. There were 34 million more primary school-aged children enrolled in school in Sub-Saharan Africa in 2006 than in 1999; there has been a significant rise in global aid since 2004, rising by 25% to just over $100 billion; under the Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative, 22 countries have now had all debts to the World Bank, IMF, and African Development Fund cancelled; and the number of people living with HIV and AIDS receiving treatment has risen tenfold in sub-Saharan Africa in the last three years.
