Climate and environment

Ensuring the environment is managed in a way that helps to reduce poverty.

How DFID is tackling climate change

DFID is committed to helping poor countries:

  • Develop in a cleaner, ‘greener’ way
  • Prepare for the impacts of climate change
  • Get a fair deal from a global climate change agreement.

We are:

  • Pushing for an effective and fair global climate deal
  • Helping poor countries to take part in negotiations
  • Helping developing countries prepare for the impacts of climate change
  • Making sure DFID’s programmes in developing countries take account of climate change
  • Helping developing countries to grow in a low-carbon, climate-smart way

We are spending:

  • £800 million through the Environmental Transformation Fund (ETF) to help fight climate change and poverty
  • £100 million to research the impacts of climate change in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and help countries prepare for these impacts - find out more about the planned Centre for Climate and Development
  • Up to 10% of DFID humanitarian aid on reducing the impacts of disasters
  • £59 million to tackle climate change and speed up investment in cleaner energy
  • £20 million through the UN to help poor countries adapt to climate change.

…and DFID is now spending more money than ever to lift people out of poverty which will make them less vulnerable to climate change.

More about climate change

Forget about making poverty history. Climate change will make poverty permanent.
