Egypt

DFID has had a long history of working in Egypt, and in recent years our programme has focused on providing support for literacy and environmental management. But last year the decision was taken to close our bilateral programme in March 2005.

Before our programme closes, we will organise workshops in Cairo involving regional stakeholders and other donors to disseminate the approaches and lessons learnt from our programmes in the environmental and education sectors. We are helping the EC to develop its 65 million euro environmental programme in South Sinai, due to start in early 2005, and are in discussions with the EC, the World Bank and USAID about future, non-DFID support for adult literacy in Egypt.

Our interest in development processes in Egypt will continue, although in future this will primarily be expressed through the work of multilateral institutions, particularly the EC. We will continue to have an advisory input on the World Bank's Nile Basin Initiative which brings together Egypt and the other nine basin states to develop solutions for the use of Nile waters, and stronger regional trade links. DFID's Great Lakes and Horn Department (GLHD) leads this work.
