Uganda

Independence for Uganda in 1962 was followed by a long period of political violence and state failure. The present government under President Museveni has been in power since 1986.

While Uganda has experienced significant economic growth for more than a decade, it remains one of the poorest countries in the world. In addition, northern Uganda has been seriously affected by the 21-year insurgency by the Lord’s Resistance Army, which has led to the displacement of approximately 1.3 million people. In addition, the national prevalence of HIV/AIDs remains a huge and ongoing problem.

How we've helped

Advocacy and Education: Promoting and protecting girls' rights in East Africa

DFID believes that gender equality is at the heart of development. Through an organization called MIFUMI, we funded an international project to help protect girls and young women in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa, from abuse through advocacy, rights promotion, and education.

Kicking dirty habits in Kampala's slums

We may take toilets for granted in the West, but for anyone from the developed world visiting the slums of Uganda's capital, their absence is hard to ignore...

Ugandan journalists put climate change on the news agenda

Climate change is little known about in developing countries - which is why one DFID-backed project is helping media professionals in Uganda to become more climate-conscious.

Ghostbusting saves Uganda’s public money

Shadowy public sector employees are costing Uganda huge amounts of money. But these workers aren't throwing away public funds through wastefulness or negligence - it's more that they don't actually exist. With DFID's help, these "ghost workers" are being busted.
