Planning water use for the poor

Research coordinated by Cranfield University produced guidelines on an integrated approach to water resources planning, based on case studies in China, India, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe. This was completed in 1997 before it was generally recognised that integrated planning and water resources management was essential for sustainable development and protection of weaker members of society.

The research led to the European Commission’s “Strategic approach to water resources development and management”, and a joint DFID/EC funded capacity building programme. In China, it stimulated a £6 million DFID funded project, and greater stakeholder participation in water resource management.
