Policy Division
The Renewable Natural Resources and Agriculture Team (RNRA Team)
Fisheries
DFID objectives in fisheries are to ensure that fisheries make the maximum possible contribution to the attainment of the MDGs. Fisheries are critical elements of poor people’s diets, especially in Africa, and are major sources of income, employment and national revenues. The RNRA team’s fisheries strategy is to develop and make available to developing countries models for the effective management of fisheries resources that realise maximum growth and poverty reduction. The RNRA team supports fisheries policy development at the international level in two areas areas:
- International action to address illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing (IUU)
- Fisheries access agreements.
Illegal Fishing
The RNRA team is working jointly with
Defra and with a number of other
governments to take forward a UK response to the recommendations of the
High
Seas Task Force. A three year programme of work is underway. This will lead to a
UK led international action plan to combat illegal fishing. DFID will support
and enhance the involvement of developing countries in this action.
Fisheries Access Agreements
The RNRA team is also working with
Defra to achieve greater coherence and
transparency in the fisheries access agreements concluded between European
fishing States and developing countries. The team is currently assessing the
impact of these on African countries and developing models and guidelines for
best practice in this area with the aim of having these integrated into
international codes of conduct.
