DFID recognises the unique importance of the media in reaching and informing the public about development issues. Research by the International Broadcasting Trust (IBT) ‘Reflecting the Real World 2 – How We Connect with the Wider World’ published in October 2007, looked at how UK television and new media portray developing countries. The research found that television and feature films are still very influential in informing audiences in the UK of the wider world and international development.

DFID helps UK programme-makers research new productions for television and
film on global issues, through the Broadcast Media Scheme which is managed by
the
Commonwealth Broadcasting Association. The scheme has already funded in excess of 150 programmes/packages, many of
which have been broadcast internationally as well as to UK audiences. Programmes
funded by the scheme and already broadcast include:
- Escape to Luanda
- Dying for Drugs
- Africa’s Schindler’s List
- The Railway Children
- Iraq – The Secret War
- Before the Flood
