What is the amount spent by DFID on throwing out surplus materials and equipment such as office furniture, computers etc, including, if possible, what was disposed of and the companies to whom the money was paid?

IT equipment: DFID use charitable recycling organisations for the disposal of surplus computer equipment. The companies we use for re-distribution of equipment in developing countries are Digital Links and Computeraid. For recycling we use Mook recycling. None of these organisations charge DFID for the uplift and redistribution of equipment.

Office furniture: our London headquarters dispose of office furniture via Azcom Business Solutions, and our East Kilbride headquarters use Shanks Waste Management. A total of £6,893 was paid for these services during the financial year 2007-08. We do not keep records of the items disposed of, however, as these typically comprise parts of desks or broken furniture.
