Recruitment
Please download or read this if you are thinking about applying:
- to work with DFID
- to work through DFID with other international organisations, eg the United
Nations
For more information about DFID's recruitment policies, go here.
Vacancies for permanent or contractual work with DFID arise on a
regular basis. A list of current external
vacancies is available here. Advertisements also appear in the
national press and specialist magazines in the UK and Europe. They may
also appear in newspapers in countries outside the UK for posts located in
a particular country.
Associate Professional Officers Scheme (APOS)
The closing date for applications to the
Associate Professional Officers Scheme was the 28th of June and has now
been reached; all applications received from this point will be
automatically rejected.
A new Professional Fast Stream for DFID
will replace APOS in 2005. Further information about this new scheme can
be found at http://www.faststream.gov.uk
. On this website if you select What is the Fast Stream, you will find a
link for the DFID Technical Development Specialists. Under this link you
will find general information about the scheme, as well as details on each
of the specialist areas.
DFID does not itself engage volunteers, even in
emergency situations. However, DFID does support UK-based organisations
specialising in sending skilled volunteers to work on long-term
assignments in developing countries.
World Service Enquiry maintains a list of organisations offering
placements for volunteers and paid employment. WSE's 'Guide to working for
development at home and overseas' is available online at http://www.wse.org.uk/. British Overseas
NGOs for Development (BOND) holds contact details for over 200 UK-based
organisations involved in development at http://www.bond.org.uk/
The volunteer recruitment website www.do-it.org.uk has launched a
one-stop guide to help people who are interested in volunteering overseas.
The site lists organisations offering volunteering opportunities
throughout the world for new and experienced volunteers, in addition to
case studies and online diaries. Find out more here
A wide range of career opportunities exist throughout the Civil
Service. Find out more by visiting the Civil Service website here.
The Civil Service Summer Placement Scheme is for disabled
undergraduates and graduates. Find out more about the 2003 scheme here
Local government offers an equally wide variety of career
opportunities: local authorities recruit numbers of graduates and
non-graduates each year.
Local authorities recruit and select as separate organisations, but the
Employers' Organisation for local government (EO) provide careers
information service on behalf of all of them on the web at www.LGcareers.com
. The EO also operates the National Graduate Development Programme for
local government ( www.ngdp.co.uk
).
The European Commission in Brussels develops and monitors the policies
of the EU through 24 Directorates-General. Entry is competitive, but UK
citizens are under-represented there, so the UK Government has set up a special staffing office to assist
people with the application procedure. The office also runs a European
Fast Stream scheme, a programme of training and work experience to help UK
candidates maximise their chances of success.
Other EU institutions that employ graduates include the European
Parliament, the Council of Ministers and The European Court of
Justice.
