Gareth Thomas, International Development Minister, today visited Jojo Maman Bébé, a Newport mother and baby fashion store, to thank the staff for their charity work in Mozambique.
Jojo Maman Bébé is heavily involved with Nema – a charity working in Northern Mozambique. The company has helped the charity provide anti-malaria bednets to every pregnant woman in one vulnerable community, fund the building of two village schools and repair or replace water pumps in several rural communities.
The shop manages the charity’s accounts and website, and has sent two Jojo workers out to Mozambique to help with Nema’s efforts.
Gareth Thomas’ visit comes on International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. Nema focuses its work on helping the women of Northern Mozambique.
The Minister helped them sign up to the global 1GOAL campaign. Launched to coincide with the first World Cup to be held in Africa, 1GOAL aims to get the 72 million children worldwide who are not receiving any education into school.
Celebrities backing the 1GOAL campaign include footballers Thierry Henry, Rio Ferdinand and Michael Essien as well as stars such as Jessica Alba, Clive Owen and Bono.
Gareth Thomas said:
“I’d like to personally thank Jojo Maman Bébé for their support to Mozambique.
“By committing funds, management and even staff to Nema, they have helped to make a real difference to the lives of those living in one of the world’s poorest countries. On International Women’s Day the fact that most of the people helped by Nema are women is to be doubly celebrated”
Laura Tenison MBE, Founder and Managing Director of JoJo Maman Bébé and Trustee of the Nema Foundation, said:
”The Minister’s visit to our head office in Newport will be such a boost for moral. Our team has been 100% behind the company’s charitable work in Mozambique, which is much more than just a ‘tick box at year end’. “JoJo and our staff are actively involved in running the charity, from handling the bookkeeping and accounts, working on the administration, recruiting personnel to work on the ground and even seconding British employees to go and assist with the projects.
