Help for cyclone-hit Fiji

17 March 2010

International Development Minister Mike Foster said:

"The UK Government is greatly concerned by the widespread damage caused by Cyclone Tomas in Fiji.

"The Department for International Development will provide £100,000 to the Fiji Red Cross to help with the immediate disaster relief efforts.

"This will help the Red Cross to provide essential supplies, such as tents, dry food rations, blankets and drinking water, as well as personnel to help those in need following the cyclone."

Cyclone Tomas hit Fiji on 15 and 16 March, causing widespread damage.  Northern and Eastern areas of the islands have been declared emergency zones, with significant damage to buildings and infrastructure and around 18,000 people moved to evacuation centres.  The donation to the Red Cross in Fiji, via the British Red Cross, will be used to provide immediate relief assistance.
