DFID Minister welcomes release of aid worker in Sudan

18 March 2010

International Development Minister Gareth Thomas has welcomed the release today of aid worker Gauthier Lefevre, who was kidnapped in Sudan’s Darfur region.

Mr Lefevre, who has dual French and British nationality, was working for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and spent 147 days in captivity.

Gareth Thomas said:

"I welcome the news today of the release of Gauthier Lefevre of the ICRC, after nearly 5 months in captivity.

“I urge the Government of Sudan to continue to press for the criminals who have taken captives in Darfur to be brought to justice.

“Following the NGO expulsions from Darfur last year, aid workers must be free to carry out their vital work without the threat of kidnap or violence.”
