Bravery and dedication of humanitarian workers

19 August 2009

International Development Minister Mike Foster today marked UN World Humanitarian Day by commending the dedication and perseverance of the international humanitarian community, who put their lives at risk in leading the fight against poverty across the globe.

He said:

"On World Humanitarian Day we applaud the bravery and dedication of humanitarian workers across the world who risk their lives, often in the midst of conflict, to provide food, water, shelter and protection to those in dire need.

“Last year, 260 humanitarian workers were killed, kidnapped or seriously injured in violent attacks in the course of their vital work.  We remember them and their families today.

“The most fitting tribute to their bravery and sacrifice is to continue their work.  Britain has a strong tradition of responding to victims of war or disaster across the world and, even in these tough economic times, the British people continue to be generous in their support for those in humanitarian need.

“The Department for International Development continues to lead the UK Government's response to humanitarian disasters and we will continue to call on governments, armed forces, and arms carriers of all kinds around the world to respect International Humanitarian Law at all times.

“DFID’s work during disasters is in co-operation with international organisations such as the United Nations, with charities and other agencies, and with the governments of the countries affected.

“In response to disaster situations, DFID’s humanitarian work aims to save lives, alleviate suffering and maintain human dignity. We try to protect people’s livelihoods and to help affected countries cope with refugees and displaced people.

“Responding effectively requires working close with all the necessary partners to ensure aid is delivered to those most in need.  DFID’s work would be impossible without these partners and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them.”
