UK gives support for new UN women's agency

15 September 2009

A breakthrough for equality and the rights of women around the world was announced today as the United Nations agreed to create an agency dedicated specifically to women.

The United Kingdom has given this move its full support. Improving gender equality is an essential part DFID's work to achieve poverty reduction. A powerful agency, headed by an Under-Secretary-General, to support national efforts and co-ordinate UN agencies will improve the lives of millions of women and girls.

A landmark moment

Welcoming the creation of the new agency, DFID Minister of State Gareth Thomas said:

"The creation of a single UN agency for women is a landmark moment for gender equality and women's rights across the world.

"It will have a far more powerful voice to help fight for the rights of women– including in many countries where they are still treated as second class citizens. But for this new agency to make a difference - it has to be formed quickly, deliver results and have a strong leader."

"The UK now stands ready to double its funding to the UN on support for women’s rights – leading to a better quality of life for millions of women globally who suffer appalling levels of violence and ill-treatment on a daily basis."

The UK has been working tirelessly with others to achieve this result. Continued strong support from UN member states will be needed to get this new agency off the ground and make it a success.
