The UK continues to push for an agreement that global emissions should peak and start to decline before 2020 and that they should be cut by at least 50% below 1990 levels by 2050. Developed countries must also agree to reduce their emissions by 80% to allow developing countries room for growth.
We are also encouraging other countries to join the UK in calling for a deal that will provide funding to to help the poorest countries adapt to their changing environment and pursue low carbon growth.
Too often, developing countries’ voices are drowned out in the debate on climate change. The UK was the first country to put a number to the amount of financing needed to enable poor countries to tackle climate change.
We are committed to using the international events in September to build support for the Prime Minister’s climate financing initiative, which proposes a financing package for poor countries of around US$100 billion a year by 2020.
Crucially, the UK is calling on developed countries to provide funding over and above what has been promised on aid.
