Fairtrade beauty products hit the UK high street

24 June 2009

The Fairtrade Foundation have today launched the first beauty products to carry the Fairtrade mark in the UK.

International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander, welcomed the news saying:

"British shoppers have shown they're keen to make sure everyone gets a fair deal. Despite all the economic pressures, sales of Fairtrade grew by 43% over the last year.  That's good news, and I'm delighted shoppers can now buy Fairtrade cosmetics."

DFID is the government department responsible for fair and ethical trade.

In February 2008 DFID announced that it was doubling its commitment to £1.2 million to expand Fairtrade labelling across Europe and to help producers in the poorest countries around the world.
