East Africa humanitarian situation

30 September 2009

Situation update

We estimate that the worsening drought across East Africa has left over 32 million people in desperate need of food aid.

The drought has affected Ethiopia in particular, but also significant populations in Kenya, Somalia, Eritrea and Sudan. Acute malnutrition rates in children under 5 have also worsened this year across the region.

The UK has been leading international efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to the region. So far this year, DFID has committed to provide over £94m including £24m for Ethiopia, £9.93m for Kenya, £5.9m for Somalia, £2.25 for Eritrea and £52m for Sudan.

Our funding is focused on delivering urgent humanitarian relief to the most vulnerable people in these countries including emergency food aid; healthcare; clean, safe drinking water, shelter and essential non-food items like soap and mosquito nets.

We are working with other donors and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
