Minouche Shafik makes the case for providing better protection for the most vulnerable

DFID's Permanent Secretary, Minouche Shafik, has joined other high profile bloggers, including Pascal Lamy of the World Trade Organisation and Josette Sheeran of the UN World Food Programme, on the Ideas for Development.Blog website.  She looks at the global financial crisis and the impact it has on the world's poor.  She makes the case for increased social protection schemes to provide better protection for the most vulnerable.

She writes:

"In every economic crisis, it is the poor that suffer the most. Whether it is individuals or countries, they are the most vulnerable and lack the savings and the institutions to support them during difficult times. In past crises, we have focused too late on adverse effects on poor people. Can we do it differently this time?"
