28 JULY 2010
Former British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, this week visited a Kampala school with links to the UK through the UK government-funded Global School Partnerships programme.
He met pupils and teachers at Buganda Road Primary School on Saturday, July 24, in a visit arranged by the British Council, part of the consortium that manages the school linking scheme.
Buganda is linked to Hawthorne Primary School in Nottingham, UK, through the programme, which aims to develop raise young people’s awareness of development issues and their commitment to a fairer, more sustainable world. The schools have been supported to develop their link through funding and professional development workshops. Teachers from the UK visited the Kampala school in January 2007 and further visits both to and from the UK are planned for later this year.
Mr Brown spoke to students and teachers at the school, was entertained by the school choir and received a bouquet of flowers from one of the pupils. He then toured the school, with a visit to the IT lab and different classes taking place.
The Global School Partnerships programme is funded by UKaid from the UK government’s Department for International Development and delivered by a consortium of the British Council, Cambridge Education Foundation, UKOWLA and VSO. Through the programme, UK teachers and students work on joint projects with partners across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.
Currently 270 schools in Uganda are linked with another 270 schools in the UK, under the Global Schools Partnership programme. In Uganda, these schools are spread over 33 districts across the country.
