This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn new skills and fight global poverty. ICS has been designed to increase your understanding and experience of the world, and to help you learn how you can help the world’s poorest people as a global citizen. It will also help you develop important skills such as team-working, communication and decision-making: really important for finding a job and building your future.
What support will you get?
Volunteers will be provided with training to make the most of this experience:
- Preparing for your departure: once you have been selected, you’ll be given pre-departure training with other volunteers taking part in a range of different ICS programmes to help you understand development issues and prepare for living and working in a different culture.
- In country: you’ll go through orientation training before starting the development project to help you become familiar with the culture in which you’ll be working and to brief you on your project or work placement, as well as on how to stay safe while you are on your placement.
- Returning to the UK: When you return to the UK, you will be helped and encouraged to continue fighting global poverty, eg. through campaigning or through other volunteering opportunities, and to share what you’ve learnt with others.
“Volunteering overseas showed me how people who are less fortunate live and opened my eyes to the challenges they face. The confidence I gained from my experience has helped me in my career and in my life generally”
Bryony Meteyard, former volunteer in South Africa (aged 21 at time of volunteering)
