Education Policy

A good education is the basis for helping to address many of the interrelated issues faced by developing countries. The Education Department is involved in developing cross cutting DFID policy and the promotion of sustainable strategies for education and development.

"The human costs of failing to enable all people to realise the right to basic education on an equitable basis are incalculable. All other efforts to improve health and nutrition, address the causes and impact of HIV/AIDS… and the achievement of other fundamental rights, are undermined"
DFID - The Challenge of Universal Primary Education

Education Millenium Goals

Our work is focused on the attainment of the Millennium Development Goal for education:

Education Millennium Development Goal - Achieve universal primary education

Corresponding target: To ensure that by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling

Education also features prominently within the Gender Millennium Development Goal:

Gender Millennium Development Goal - Promote gender equality and empower women

Corresponding Education target: Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education preferably by 2005 and to all levels of education no later than 2015

The other Millennium Development Goal in which education plays an important part, is the Goal for HIV/AIDS.

HIV/AIDs Millennium Development Goal - Combat HIV/AIDs, malaria and other diseases

The second major priority "Beyond Primary Education" is education and skills development. It recognises that if globalisation is to work for poor people, increased investment in education, life-long learning and skills is essential.
