The Multilateral Aid Review was launched by the Secretary of State on Wednesday 9 June.
The aim of the Multilateral Aid Review is to ensure that the UK gets maximum value for money from its contributions to multilateral organisations.
DFID currently funds over 40 multilateral organisations to undertake a broad range of activities, such as leading the fight against HIV, malaria and TB, responding to natural disasters, providing large scale infrastructure, supporting children and women, and peacekeeping. These organisations are able to work in many more countries than the UK can reach on its own, and on a scale beyond any single country.
Each organisation will be assessed to ensure the UK is getting maximum value from its aid money. This will include looking at the relevance of each institution to the UK’s objectives on poverty reduction and their ability to deliver results on the ground.
Organisations that demonstrate value for money and the greatest impact on poverty could receive extra funding. Those that fail to meet the tough criteria could have their funding reduced or stopped altogether.
It is vitally important that the review take into account the performance on the ground of the organisations we fund. In-depth reviews of multilateral performance are taking place during July and August in the following countries: Sierra Leone, Uganda, Bangladesh, Nepal, Tanzania, Indonesia, Tajikistan, Yemen and Mali. We will also draw on other sources of evidence such as the Multilateral Organisations Performance Assessment Network (MOPAN).
The multilaterals being assessed have been asked to submit evidence to be considered as part of the review. DFID will also be consulting extensively with the UK’s largest civil society organisations, including the BOND network, and also with partner country governments to understand their needs and views. Independent assessors will be involved throughout the review process.
The report will be published in early 2011
