Purpose
We published the final version of Defra's Science & Innovation Strategy, Delivering the Evidence. It aims to-
- communicate for the first time, Defra's scientific objectives, direction and vision;
- identify the range and purpose of Defra's scientific activities planned for the next three years;
- explain how science is being used to address and underpin principal policy needs;
- help Defra's science agencies and others to define the scientific priorities for their own strategies;
- provide a baseline for the 2003 'Forward Look' , which will look towards the next ten years and be used to inform our future science strategies. (This content has been moved to the National Archive)

Feedback
Many thanks to all those who have gave feedback on the previous draft
of the Strategy. A summary of the comments received is given here
.
Feedback from the Open Meeting in April has been invaluable, as it has allowed us to strengthen the final document. We have attempted to address the issues raised by stakeholders since the Open Meeting.
As a result of feedback, the strategy is now clearer on:
- how science will contribute to policy making (see Section 1);
- how we will encourage innovation (see boxed texts in each chapter) and
- how we will measure success against the strategy (see additional chapter 10)
It was gratifying to know that many stakeholders felt the draft strategy was on the right lines and welcomed Defra's strategic approach to science and innovation.
