Defra and the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton are hosting the committee secretariat.

Science strategy update meeting

An update meeting of how the UK Marine Science Strategy is progressing will be held at the Defra Innovation Centre on Friday 31 July. Please e-mail the MSCC Secretariat if you would like to attend.

Non-executive members

We are seeking 3 non-executive members to be appointed to the MSCC. Applicants should have experience of marine science from one or more of the following areas: industry/academia/non-governmental organisations.

Although these appointments do not come within the remit of the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments, they are being made using a process which takes into account the Commissioner’s Code of Practice as best practice. The closing date for applications was noon, 13 July 2009. We expect the appointments to be made in mid-August 2009.

What will the Committee do?

The Committee was set up in response to the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee report "Investigating the Oceans"‘ to help the UK to face up to future marine science challenges. The immediate task of the Committee is to develop a UK Marine Science Strategy.

MSCC meetings

The MSCC met for the first time on Thursday 17th July 2008. The minutes (PDF), which include terms of reference for the Committee and the broad outline for the Strategy are available online.

The second meeting took place on Friday 13th March 2009 and took the form of a facilitated workshop to help shape the Strategy. A record of the workshop (PDF 235KB) is available.

UK Marine Science Strategy

The first task of the MSCC will be to develop a UK Marine Science Strategy which we aim to produce by the end of 2009. To help inform the content of this Strategy, a series of stakeholder workshops were held. A description of the content of the workshops is available (PDF 133KB) plus outputs from the individual workshops for Reading on 23 April 2009 (PDF 219KB), Reading on 30 April 2009 (PDF 300KB) and Edinburgh on 5 May 2009 (PDF 307KB).
