Computer aided design

Episode 5. Plenary: Evaluation

Required Resources

  • Student Worksheet 5

Delivery

  • Ask students to evaluate the success of their product using the product analysis grid on Student Worksheet 5.
  • Conduct a class discussion to consider the value of using the CAD/CAM process in designing new equipment for the British Armed Forces. Consider:
    • CAM speeds up the delivery of a product significantly
    • Products are likely to be more precise and more reliable than those made by hand
    • Some equipment can be tested in a virtual environment meaning that more design ideas can be evaluated at lower overall cost to the MOD
    • The precision of the process means that the cost of products is probably easier to calculate and generates less waste materials than production by hand.
