Major body systems

Lesson Plan

1. (Starter) - connections - Duration 5 mins

Episode

Learning Objectives

Resources

  • Play students a piece of video featuring Royal Marines tackling a major assault course using all major body systems (except for the digestive system).
  • Next, project and pronounce the names of the major body systems and without explaining the function of any of these, play the video again. This time students should identify at least one instance where each body system is employed.
  • The names of the seven major body systems.
  • Awareness of the interdependence of the major body systems.
  • Awareness of the five body systems most important during physical exercise.
  • Video: Royal Marines assult course
  • Slides

2. Functions of the major body systems - Duration 5 mins

Episode

Learning Objectives

Resources

  • Introduce the lesson topic and explain that though they work hardest when we physically exert our bodies, our major body systems are continually employed.
  • Project Slides 4-18 and ask students to match the name of each body system with its core function.
  • Time permitting you may want to also discuss the impact that damage to that body system might have on physical competence.
  • Names and core functions of the seven body systems.
  • The importance of maintaining optimum health / performance.
  • Slides

3. Optimum performance - Duration 10 mins

Episode

Learning Objectives

Resources

  • Gather students' responses to Episode 2, discussing each body system in turn. Supporting slides feature images of Armed Forces personnel in various roles, demonstrating the importance of specific body systems in their roles. For example:
    • Hormonal system: soldier on patrol in Afghanistan
    • Muscular: RAF rugby squad
    • Digestive: effect of diet in ration pack
    • Skeletal: soldier in a desk job
    • Nervous system: pilot
    • Respiratory: soldier on exercise at altitude
    • Circulatory: Royal Marines digging emergency snow holes.
  • As you progress, highlight the 5 body systems which are most critical to good sporting performance and activity of troops on operations.
  • Applied examples of major body systems
  • Slides

4. Inter-connections - Duration 10 mins

Episode

Learning Objectives

Resources

  • Playing the video again, highlight the interconnection between the major body systems, i.e. that many are employed simultaneously. Discuss the impact of each body system on the performance of another e.g. poor respiratory performance impacts on muscular performance.
  • On the whiteboard draw up the interdependencies between each body system.
  • How body systems inter-relate with each other.
  • The impact of damage to one major body system on the body's performance as a whole.
  • Video: Royal Marines assault course

5. Optimising performance - Duration 25 mins

Episode

Learning Objectives

Resources

  • Distribute Student Worksheet 1. Divide the class into seven teams and allocate one body system to each. In each team, students need to establish the following for their allocated body system:
    • What is its function?
    • How does it contribute to physical performance?
    • How does it inter-relate with other body systems during physical activity?
    • What is the impact of damage to your body system on the body's overall performance?
    • How can you optimise its performance?
  • Teams then provide training advice to two soldiers about to embark on different operations, helping them to optimise the performance of their allocated body system.
  • They present their recommendations to an interviewing 'panel'.
  • Detailed knowledge on the role of each body system.
  • The importance of the 5 main body systems in sport, and how to optimise performance.
  • Reinforce learning.
  • Peer to peer learning.
  • Coaching experience.
  • Student Worksheet 1

6. (Plenary) - quick-fire round - Duration 5 mins

Episode

Learning Objectives

Resources

  • Revise students' learning with a quick fire quiz, done individually or as a class, content reflecting the specific fitness requirements of UK troops.
  • Revision and consolidation
  • Slides
