The Global Community
International cooperation
Synopsis
This lesson looks at challenges facing the global community including international disagreements and conflict, debates about inequalities, sustainability and use of the world's resources, international piracy and drug-running.
Students should relate their studies not only to the key concepts, but also to the ethical considerations in actions and policy relating to the following: the UK's role in the world as a trading nation and in terms of global diplomacy; being a member of international organisations; opposing those who break international law, deny human rights or threaten the UK; acting as a peacekeeper and as a provider of debt relief and humanitarian aid.

Learning Outcomes
Lower ability students will:- Use the term globalisation and know that the UK has a responsibility as a member of this global community.
- Know that every country relies on other countries to meet some or all of its needs.
- Be able to name key international organisations such as NATO, the UN and the Commonwealtth.
- Be able to name two examples of international cooperation.
- Know that UK Armed Forces co-operate in operations with other countries.
- Understand the relationship between globalisation and the need for international cooperation.
- Understand, through examples the degree of interdependence (e.g. economic) between nations.
- Know the key global institutions that support and aid international co-operation. Be aware of their respective roles.
- Be able to provide some detail about two examples of international cooperation. Understand some of the motivations behind them.
- Have detailed knowledge of ways in which UK Armed Forces co-operate in operations with other countries.
- Be able to explain why advancing globalisation increases the need for international cooperation.
- Be able to cite examples of international interdependencies and give examples of the impact of breakdown or development of any of these.
- Be able to name the key institutions that support and aid international co-operation. Be able to outline their roles and specifically the role of the UK within these institutions.
- Be able to give detailed examples of two types of international cooperation and describe and explain the motivations behind their instigation.
- Understand how and why UK Armed Forces are directed by the British Government to work with other countries.
