Liberal Reforms 1906-1918

2. The Boer War

Required Resources

  • Student Worksheet 1-2
  • Slides 4-10

Delivery

  • Split students into pairs and distribute a copy of Student Worksheet 1 to each pair. The Worksheet contains a number of sources which provide information comparing the health of the British Working Class in the 19th century with the middle and upper class.
  • Students are to read the information and write a short paragraph outlining the difference between the health of the classes and suggesting possible reasons for this.
  • Using Slides 4-7 introduce Seebohm Rowntree's report from 1899. Using Student Worksheet 2, ask students to plot different points on an axis to create a poverty cycle graph.
  • Display Slide 7 which contains a completed version of the Poverty Cycle.
  • Students then answer the questions below the axis on Student Worksheet 2.

Differentiation

Lower Ability:

Some lower ability students may struggle to complete their own version of the poverty cycle in which case the exercise could be tackled as a class discussion.

Higher Ability:

Ask higher ability students to use the internet to undertake some research on the Rowntree Foundation and write a short report on its history and aims.
